Two Sunday Choices: The Super Bowl or Downton Abbey

For me, Sunday is the best night of the week for TV viewing. On Super Bowl Sunday when my father was alive, we always watched the Super Bowl, and he often won the pool, having guessed the scores correctly. A rugby player in his youth, he gave up rugger when he got married and became an armchair quarterback. Since the Giants are playing and we feel loyal to both of our New York teams, it is likely that we watch some or all of the game. But I will also be waiting for Once upon a Time on ABC, a unique look at fairy tales and modern life, and Downton Abbey, the latest historical drama from Masterpiece Theater on PBS (13).

Downton Abbey is a captivating and beautifully enacted drama that begins in 1912 with the sinking of the Titanic and its effects on the aristocratic family, the Crawleys. The lord of the manor, Earl Grantham, only has daughters, so by the British law at the time, his estate has to pass on to a male heir, the two closest of which perished on the Titanic. Thus, the Earl is forced to dig deeper into the family tree, where he finds that a second cousin, a respectable middle class lawyer named Matthew, is next in line. The drama of the story centers around that conflict, but the overriding story is one of tradition and love, both family love and romantic love.

So after the Giants have despatched the Patriots, I hope to travel to Downton Abbey, where Edwardian life holds some life lessons for us in the 21st century. What are they? Tune in, and you will see.

Very interesting to find out a little more about you! My husband and I just started creating some small but special traditions for our family. I look forward to the many special memories my son will have with us in the future so he can also tell friends and family.

Well the game is over and the GIANTS have come out victorious. What a game! I myself don't know much about the game, but since I no longer have access to my favorite game of RUGBY and the "Rugby World cup"...I will have to settle for "Super Bowl Sunday". At least the advertisements are entertaining :)

Yes,v there's not much chance of seeing rugby get that kind of attention here.

Super Bowl Sunday is really like a holiday in my parents house. Actually every Sunday is like a holiday during football season. It has become a nice tradition...It was a great game and I am thrilled that the Giants won ( I strongly dislike the Patriots, their QB and their coach!) I was not as impressed with the comercials this year as I have been in the past...my favorite one is the Clint Eastwood commercial..."America's Halftime".

Yes, I agree it was a great game! Very close throughout the entire game and especially the last 15 seconds. I was very lucky and won the "pool" where I watched the Superbowl. I won the 1st, 2nd and 3rd quarter :)

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to watch it this year but I am happy that the Giants won. My claim to fame is that I am related to the famous Vince Lombardi. He was my grandfather's first cousin. They named the trophy of the Super Bowl after him.

Imagine being related to Vince Lombardi! Amazing!

Your father played rugby? I LOVE rugby and football. My boyfriend played rugby for Hofstra and actually led them to victory during the Northeastern Championships back in 2005. He still plays every year during the alumni game and actually has been coaching the Hofstra's women's rugby team for 5 years now. I know they were discussing adding rugby to the Olympics for this year but that fell through. I hope they add it for the next summer games. My boyfriend's brother actually plays for the Long Island team and was being looked at for USA team.
In addition, my boyfriend and I are die hard Giants fans. This is absolutely fascinating to learn all this about you! I hope the Giants can pull off what they did last year and win 2 Super Bowls back-to-back.
