A New Year and New Hope

Welcome to Structure and  Application of American English! You can write about yourself and anything else about life in America that you think would be interesting to your ESL students.

This past week I was touched by the dreadful yet amazing story of a house fire in Bushwick, Brooklyn. A man on the 3rd floor of one of the old wooden houses smelled smoke, so he went downstairs, where he found his disabled neighbor  surrounded by thick smoke. He realized that there was a fire, so he put her on his back and carried her downstairs and out of the house. Her cat had also grabbed onto his pant leg, hung on for dear life, and rode out of the fire with them.

When the man got outside, he looked up to the 3rd floor, where his wife and son were standing by a window trying to breathe. The man knew he couldn't get back in, so he got down on his knees and prayed to God that his family would be rescued. The fire truck arrived just then and brought his family down.(Read the news story.)

Wow, this is a very impressive story about a brave neighbor trying to help. It's nice to see people who are still willing to help others.

I did not know about this incident in Brooklyn. I thought it was captivating for an audience and provided good visual imagery for the reader. The included activities that were structured similarly to the post making it more easily understood. Also, the definition of the bolded vocabulary words were not complicated and easy to grasp.

I thought this story was an interesting one, it provided captivating imagery for the reader. I think being able to form a visualization about the theme helps readers understand and connect to the material. I hope everyone is doing well who was involved!

I think that this passage would be good for an ESL student to read. This passage contains many vocabulary words that some children may be unfamiliar with. I liked this story because a child could make a text to self connection. Many families face fires in their homes each year and it could happen to anyone. This writing passage also always a child to open up about a story maybe he/she would be afraid to tell to the class. This exercise provides a child with a differentiated style of learning. The picture also provides a great visual tool for the multiple students who will be completing the activity.

I definitely felt touched by the news that you posted. So sad to think that his own family could have died, had the fire trucks not arrived on time. But, just goes to show how great and miraculous God is...
